Make a Difference
Last year we reached over 3500 people; people like SJ. We met SJ at a homeless shelter in London, they were struggling with loneliness, depression and relationships. Through enrolling in one of our 12 week poetry projects SJ found a community they could rely on. Each week they attended their confidence grew, staff reported a change in their attitude and behaviour, they had found their voice through their writing and sharing of ideas. Over the lockdown period SJ was housed in a local hotel, we sent weekly creative activity packs to them and fifty others, to keep them engaged and occupied during a time of intense isolation. SJ has since been able to find temporary accommodation and continues to send us emails of their poems.
They said;
I was out of touch with myself and others. Everything seemed to take me into a deeper darkness. I wasn’t interested in the poetry group, I didn’t think it was for people like me, but Writerz and Scribez really changed my mind on that. For two hours every week I had a space to go that accepted me, valued my presence and allowed me time to develop and create. It was and continues to be a deeply memorable project that helped me find the light within myself again.
